Tingloy

Tingloy, officially known as the Municipality of Tingloy, is a 5th class municipality located in Batangas, Philippines. As of the latest census conducted in 2020, it is home to an estimated population of around 19,215 residents. This municipality encompasses Maricaban Island, Caban Island, and several smaller islets located south of the Calumpang Peninsula.

History and Heritage

According to stories, the name “Tingloy” is derived from the abundant “tinghoy” plant that can still be found flourishing on the island. It’s a charming detail that adds to the island’s allure.

The history of Tingloy unveils a tale of early settlers seeking refuge from Spanish conquerors. These brave individuals, arriving with their families, discovered a safe haven and established distinct areas that now form the various barrios of Tingloy. It is said that Jose Martinez, a Taaleño, founded the former barrio of Tingloy, adding a personal touch to the island’s history.

Over the years, Tingloy experienced changes in governance, being under the jurisdiction of different towns. Initially, it was part of San Luis, then came under the governance of Bauan in 1917, only to be separated a year later with the establishment of Mabini municipality. Eventually, in 1921, it returned under Bauan’s jurisdiction, forming a lasting connection with its administrative roots.

Education played a vital role in Tingloy’s development, evolving from household learning during the Spanish era to the establishment of schools during the American occupation. The efforts of individuals like Ireneo Martinez and Flaviano Gamben resulted in the construction of a model schoolhouse in Tingloy, showcasing the community’s commitment to education and growth.

During the early years of the Republic of the Philippines, Tingloy officially became a municipality. The separation of Tingloy, Maricaban, Papaya, Pisa, Gamao, and Talahib from the Municipality of Bauan led to the creation of Tingloy as an independent municipality. This milestone was marked by the appointment of the first set of municipal officials, including Mayor Ramon De Claro, on June 17, 1955.

Geographically, Tingloy offers a picturesque location. Situated just off the southwest coast of the Batangas mainland, the island neighbors Maricaban Island, which takes the shape of a radish. Climate

The rainy season starts in June and ends in November. When December comes, the people experienced a very cool dawn. The summer season on the month of March to the end of May.
