Remo Valenton’s artistic journey is one of resilience and passion, stretching from Batangas to national acclaim. His art reflects not just creativity, but also important messages about life and society. Valenton uses everyday materials and new ideas to create paintings that make people think. He’s not just about art—he also gives back to his community and works with others to make a difference. Whether he’s painting in a gallery or his garage, Valenton’s art captures hearts and minds, showing that anyone can make a difference with creativity and determination.

Renowned Batangueño visual artist, Remo Valenton, has recently garnered national attention, marking a significant milestone in his artistic journey. On April 9, 2024, Valenton shared his remarkable story in an exclusive interview with Benedict Abaygar on the esteemed program, Pinoy Talks, broadcasted by Vantage Point Media in Quezon City.

Valenton’s narrative is one of resilience and dedication. He recounted how he temporarily set aside his passion for visual arts to prioritize his familial responsibilities. However, in 2021, he reignited his artistic pursuits, emphasizing the importance of patience and timing in one’s creative endeavors. Addressing remarks from acquaintances about his delayed artistic bloom, Valenton gracefully highlighted the notion that every individual has their own unique path to artistic maturity.

When questioned about his artistic process and discipline, Valenton likened it to the gradual warming up of a diesel engine. He begins his day with mundane tasks, gradually immersing himself in the creative process when inspiration strikes. Remarkably, he creates his masterpieces in his garage, utilizing the space to accommodate the large-scale and weighty nature of his artworks.

During the interview, Valenton unveiled some of his captivating paintings, each telling a story of personal evolution. From a palette reflecting themes of socialism and activism rooted in his past experiences, he has transitioned to vibrant hues exuding joy and positivity. Notably, he incorporates innovative elements such as glow-in-the-dark materials and salvaged corrugated tin roof scraps, infusing his artworks with depth and texture.

Valenton’s upcoming endeavors include a highly anticipated solo exhibition at the prestigious Philippine Women’s University Helena Z. Benitez Hall, scheduled from September 6 to 13. This exhibition not only showcases his artistic prowess but also introduces “REMOISM” as a distinctive artistic identity, setting him apart in the realm of contemporary art.

Moreover, Valenton remains committed to nurturing young talent and giving back to his community. Through his involvement with BAGSIK, the pioneering artist group he founded in 1991, the artist group conducts free workshops benefiting aspiring artists in Batangas. His philanthropic efforts extend to supporting local institutions such as the Museo ng Batangas and the Better Together Foundation of Agoncillo, Batangas.

In addition to his local engagements, Valenton has received international recognition, with invitations to exhibit his works in Europe. His art, infused with symbolism drawn from everyday Filipino life, notably incorporates corrugated tin roof scraps—a material emblematic of shelter and resilience.

Valenton’s advice to aspiring artists echoes his own journey—embrace humility, maintain discipline, and foster a spirit of camaraderie within the artistic community. His words serve as a beacon of inspiration for emerging talents navigating their own artistic paths.
